After your visit to Trakai Castle you will continue onto Grutas Park (Gruto Parkas).
Considered a controversial idea by some locals, Gruto Parkas is the final resting ground for many Soviet Sculptures. During Soviet times statues of Stalin and Lenin were placed anywhere of importance in the Baltic's. In town squares great big monuments were erected, in schools, libraries and hospitals, busts or smaller statues would be placed. After independence these were gleefully ripped down, only now to be collected together in one place. It makes for an interesting visit and also has a wonderful restaurant serving traditional and tasty food.

Today thousands and thousands of crosses, big, small, simple or ornate reside on a small hill in the countryside . Its quite something to see and a very special place.

The itinerary was expertly arranged by Baltic Holidays and provided us with a flawless, yet pleasant and unrushed opportunity to experience the beauty and splendor of these cultural heritage cities. Our private local guides were superb in their knowledge of history, current events and architecture, as well as their ability to express themselves in fluent English.
For sheer enjoyment and complete relaxation, leaving all arrangements in Phil Teubler's hands, I cannot think of a better deal for a visit to the Baltic Countries...
Fred Kranz Maryland USA August 2008
